Interweaving (Disintegration Cycles)

Video, 4 Minutes and 33 Seconds, 2020

(Collaboration with Arielle Eisen) This project started with the interweaving of our interests in reconstruction and ruin; focusing on the aestheticization of disintegration by connecting it to the presence of bodily warmth. Our produced de- or re-construction cycle exists not in a linear progression from beginning to end, but more so in an interconnected web.

The imagery is a deconstructed sculpture by Arielle under candlelight. They referenced familiar childhood memories to fabricate a blanket in steel. The visible rust on the metal on the right side comes from the residue of Arielle walking barefoot on the piece during the process of taking it apart. The texture on the fragment of the blanket’s frill on the left side is from cold-forming the steel with a hammer, the same process used to form the original. Sounds of this action can be heard in the audio, along with Arielle’s breathing during the process. Other fragmentary sounds include Zack’s piano playing and field recordings of fire. The audio is panned left and right to correlate to the two images.
